Toddler Bolognese

Mince is a family favourite and a good source of dietary protein, iron and zinc. This Toddler Bolognese will be a hit with the whole family and sneaks in plenty of extra vegetables. Still serve some broccoli or green beans on the side, as it’s good to normalise eating whole vegetables from a young age. This recipe serves 5 adults.

Ingredients

  • 500g Quality Mark beef or lamb mince
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 medium sized carrot, grated
  • 1 zucchini, grated OR 1 celery stalk finely chopped
  • 1 small capsicum (finely diced) – if in season
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • 400g can, salt-reduced chopped tomatoes in juice
  • 2 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 2 cups, salt-reduced, beef stock,
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano 
  • Parsley for serving
  • ½ cup grated cheese – optional
  • 300g dried spaghetti

Method

  1. Fry onion in olive oil until translucent.
     
  2. Add mince, garlic and dried herbs, fry till mince is browned, about 5 minutes
     
  3. Add tomato paste and capsicum a fry for 1 minute.
     
  4. Add vegetables, stock, and chopped tomatoes and simmer till vegetables have softened.
     
  5. Simmer with the lid off for around 15 minutes, till all vegetables are cooked and sauce is reduced
     
  6. Serve over cooked spaghetti and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Optional – sprinkle over some grated cheese.

  • This bolognese can also be served to younger babies from 8-9 months who have already been exposed to all the ingredients. Mash or cut it up to the consistency the baby is familiar with. 
  • If serving for adults, you can add a bit of chilli to spice things up and season with salt and pepper.
