We are excited to share our plans with you for National Lamb Week coming up from Monday 21st May through to Sunday 27th May which includes National Lamb Day (NLD) on Thursday 24th May.

If you haven't heard, NLD this year will take place on Thursday 24th May. In previous years it has taken place on 15th February – the date the SS Dunedin left Port Chalmers for Britain with the first shipment of lamb over 130 years ago. After recommendations from the Beef + Lamb NZ Inc board, it was suggested that we shift the date to ensure there was a guaranteed supply. So we changed it to 24th May which just happens to be when the SS Dunedin arrived in Britain all those years ago.
So what have we got planned we hear you all asking?
Well it’s massive – literally. We are in the process of making a six metre high ‘lamb chop’ that we plan to take on The Lamb and Three Veg Tiki Tour of New Zealand using the Backyard Cook – Marty Shanahan (see his Facebook page HERE). Starting off in early May at the giant kumara in Dargaville, we plan to navigate our way down to Dunedin (or Port Chalmers to be exact) via some of the other wacky Kiwi attractions including the L&P bottle in Paeroa, the big carrot in Ohakune and the Watties Pea Factory in Christchurch. The aim is to make as much noise and cut through as possible, so that all our stakeholders can leverage off this.
We then plan to leave the Big Chop at a yet to be decided location. This is where we need you!

We would like to invite applications from Beef + Lamb farmers who would be keen to host the Big Chop on their farm as a temporary ‘attraction’. The Big Chop will be transported and housed on a trailer which will be easily moveable and we would like it to be in position for no longer than a month.

Ideally your location will be:
•    Easily accessible.
•    Visible from a road – the busier the road the better.
•    Ideally sheltered from the wind – but not essential.
•    Willing to host a small-scale event which media and stakeholders will attend.
•    NB. there will be no expectation to let the public onto your land.
If you think you have the perfect spot, please contact Kit Arkwright (, Marketing Manager at Beef + Lamb NZ Inc for more information.

Could you be a LAMBASSADOR?

Are you active on social media? Do you often share what’s going on in your community? Well we need you to be one of our Lambassadors.
Now don’t worry, this isn’t going to be a tedious task. All we want is an army of active farmers who can go and bang the drum for us across social media and in their communities during May, National Lamb Day (NLD) and beyond – telling anyone they can about NLD and encourage them to get behind it.
If you are interested in becoming a Lambassador, please contact Kit Arkwright (, Marketing Manager at Beef + Lamb NZ Inc for more information.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.
