Ingredients

  • 450g lean minced beef or lamb
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 300ml water
  • 1 tsp tomato purée*
  • 1 tsp dried mixed herbs
  • Black pepper
Vegetable Topping
  • 450g potatoes, chopped
  • 225g swede, chopped
  • 100g carrots, chopped
  • Knob of butter or margarine
  • 2-3 Tbsp milk*

Method

Boil the potato, swede and carrots in unsalted water until softened. Meanwhile, dry fry the mince and onion until browned. Gradually add the water, tomato purée, herbs and pepper. Bring to the boil and stir until thickened. (Use cornflour if necessary). Transfer to an ovenproof dish. Drain and mash the vegetables with butter and milk and place on top of the mince mixture. Bake at 190ºC for 25 minutes until golden. Serve with carrots or seasonal vegetables.

* 6 - 7 months

This recipe is only suitable from 6 months if the tomato purée is omitted and the vegetables are mashed with breast or formula milk. Blend the Country Pie into a smooth paste.

8 - 9 months

Serve the layers separately so baby can experience different tastes and textures.

9 - 12 months

The Country Pie can be served with extra vegetables, either chopped or in sticks and given as finger food.
